Skype Crashes After Upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

After upgrading your desktop or laptop to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Reduction in audio quality (jittery calls)
  • Crashing after receiving an Instant Message
  • Crashing when trying to send an Instant Message
  • Slow program functionality

All of the above issues can be resolved by removing Skype and ensuring that the newest version is installed (2.1.0.81 at time of writing)

Skype can be downloaded here.

Upgraded from 2.0.0.72 to 2.1.0.81, after upgrading from Ubuntu Jaunty to Lucid. I have to start it using a workaround for GLX/Cairo-dock (export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 && skype), and it works great. I refuse to use pulseaudio, so I am using ESD and ALSA. Audio and video are both very crisp. Thank you for continuing to improve on Skype for Linux. It is truly the only thing I have found that works consistently.

DS Erbes, do you even understand how the internet works? You think JayTag – intelligent, witty people as they may be – are the guys who coded up Skype?

Maybe you should stick with using landline telephones for now, eh?

Hi Guys, I have a ubuntu 10.04 installed on thinkpadT42, skype was running fine on it. but recently , i noticed that , if now i open the skype from Applications, Then the skype application is launched and after around 1 min it wanishes. I saw that the process is killed after 1 min.
I uninstalled the software and Reinstalled it and still the same bahaviour. Skype version i am using is:2.2.0.25
Is there any solution to this problem??

I wish that I could say that I have a known fix for this issue – 2.2.0.25 appears to be a slightly older version – have you tried 2.2.0.35 here? Also, there is a known issue with Skype and PulseAudio (changing to ALSA is a pain, I know) check the thread here and especially this post.
